Online Poker Worth the Time?
Poker has been a sport of camaraderie for men and women for a couple of centuries now. With poker at one of its most popular states in society, online poker and gaming sites have risen to a heightened popularity. These online poker sites offer the fun of the game at any time, yet are they missing the sense of bonding that has always been a mainstay of the sport? Even if an online casino offers up the fun, there are still so many important elements of real poker, not a part of playing at home.
Is a “Pokerface” Possible in Online Poker?
The most obvious difference from playing for real or online is the absence of human interaction and the ability to “read” people’s faces. One of the most complex skills in playing poker comes from being able to tell when somebody is bluffing or not. Poker players can tell from various facial interactions, behavioral ticks, and conversations when someone is bluffing. In online poker, the only way people can “read” a bluff is through prior behavior on previous hands. Perhaps for a statistics major, this is okay, but for poker players with the heightened sense of awareness to read human behavior, this gives them a definite disadvantage.
Due to this absence of human interaction, the game becomes much more about statistical probability than anything else. People playing from their homes will have to rely on their calculations on how certain probable cards will show up. While this has always been an aspect of playing poker, its worth doubles or even triples when on the internet.
Online Poker: Male Bonding Not as Much of an Element
The worst aspect of online poker, when compared to a social gathering, is that the enjoyment of human bonding falls to the wayside with only keys from a keyboard and a glowing screen as a player’s companionship. Beers, nuts, potato chips, and conversation on the problems at work are now not a part of the game. This makes it seem like an online casino offers very little regarding social fun. Instead, it becomes more like an addiction, which gambling already is.
Despite these problems with online poker, it still is an incredibly popular form of amusement in our current society. The lack of human interaction, reliance on mathematical skills, and dearth in bonding makes it a very different game than the old school one our fathers and grandfathers played. Even so, it has its own merits and worth and will probably be popular for many decades to come.
