PokerStars Pro Isildur1 Real Identity is Viktor Blom
After more than a year of intense speculation the press conference held at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) poker tournament series on January 8, 2011 revealed the identity of Swedish online phenom Isildur1 as the young Viktor Blom. Blom had been the leading contender for the real identity of the high stakes online pro, but until Blom stepped out from behind a black curtain in front of the press no one was certain he was the true Isildur1.
What the future may hold for Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom is a well known 20-year-old pro from Sweden and has played several tournaments over the years, mainly in Europe, but has most recently placed 16th in the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event back in September. His online credits have been modest, but now that his identity has been revealed the poker world knows exactly the type of player Blom is, especially online.
Just this past week Blom took part in the Super High Roller $100,000 buy-in event at the PCA where he was busted before the first day was over. Before Blom was set to take part in a heads-up match against fellow PokerStars Team Pro Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Blom answered just 5 questions from the media right after he was revealed as Isildur1. One of the big questions was how the unveiling of his identity will change his future, and Blom responded that he will begin playing more European Poker Tour (EPT) events and try to win one in this year.
PokerStars Changes from the Signing of Viktor “Isildur1” Blom
Blom also said he is going to be focusing on PokerStars’ newest draw which are the SuperStar Showdown matches that feature Viktor “Isildur1” Blom against predetermined competitors at predetermined times within a 2,500-hand structure. This newest creation by PokerStars is the first major attempt by an online poker room to leverage the popularity of high stakes online poker games and turn it into a spectator sport in the hope that online railbirds for these matches might just play along on another table while Blom and the other player battle it out on the high stakes tables.
One of the biggest changes people will find is that on the PokerStars website the long standing image of Daniel Negreanu has now been replaced by that of Viktor Blom. Negreanu has become poker royalty over the past ten years and is by far the most recognizable face PokerStars has on their roster of pros. The Canadian born poker player even placed second in the Super High Roller Event at the PCA this past weekend and walked away with a nice $1 million prize, thus pushing him above Phil Ivey as the top tournament money winner in history. Now he has been, at least momentarily, replaced by the fame of Viktor Blom.
This year should be Blom’s effort to try and create as much buzz as possible given that his last year was rather uneventful as Isildur1. PokerStars, being the largest poker room in the world, will demand results in the way of high stakes cash victories reflective of the antics Isildur1 was known for on Full Tilt Poker, but they will also demand tournament victories, which are historically hard to come by. No matter what 2011 should be interesting for Viktor Blom and PokerStars as they attempt to rewrite the norms of high stakes online poker.
